Pandemic reflections on vitreous enamel

Enamel to me is a very peaceful and personal practice and after taking almost a year and a half away from the kiln, when March arrived and things started shifting into what we all live today, I had a very strong urge to make something to remember these times.

I wanted to share with you two pieces, in the order I made them and a bit about them, these pieces were chosen to be part of “Under fire 3” a juried enamel exhibition which this year had to be online, you can see the exhibit over  here

“State of emergency”

Spain declared a state of emergency due to the current pandemic from March 14th to June 21st, a total of 99 days that were announced every 2 weeks.

During this time I started marking an X on my calendar to count the days, after the first 2 weeks and as I came to terms with the fact that things would last way longer, I moved on to mark the days on these objects, as I wanted something with permanence for myself, as a project, as a daily ritual , as something to look back on.

Graphite on enamel fades slightly as the piece is fired and graphite is embedded into the glass, this goes well with my memories of these days, they are still there but are fading.

“2020”

This piece consists of the images and conversations that have crossed my path in these past few months, uncertainty, confusion, patience, silence, problem-solving and counting the days. This is a materialization of how I will remember this year.
